Got Nausea?

Recently one of our Udaya students posted in our facebook group that she gets nauseous while practicing yoga.  The helpful and supportive community offered her tips on what and when to eat to help avoid the uneasy stomach, but nothing worked.  I suggested that it may be related to her vestibular system (which regulates balance and spatial orientation).  I suggested she leave out any inverted poses, i.e. head below the heart, like Adho Mukha Svanasana (downward facing dog pose) and Uttanasana (standing forward bend pose).  She confirmed that the omission of these poses prevented her nausea!

What’s Next?

If this is you, begin by leaving any inverted poses out of your practice.  Yes, you will have to modify.  Then once a day bust out a downward dog for about 15 seconds.  Do this separate from your practice at a different time of day, so any potential feelings of uneasiness aren’t associated with your practice.  Gradually increase the time until you are accustomed to being upside down and can begin to incorporate inverted poses into your practice.
