A diet rich in whole foods is ideal for everyone, but when it comes to shopping for the right stuff, sometimes it’s hard to know what to always have around. There are a few super foods out there that are great to have on hand year round. Here they are and why they’re so important.

1. Ground flax seeds

The average American is deficient in fiber. Fiber is essential for an efficient and clean system because it binds to toxins and escorts them out of our bodies. This includes toxins from the environment, food, water, and also hormonal toxins that build up from stress. When these toxins aren’t properly eliminated, they’re recirculated through the system, which leads to inflammatory diseases and skin issues.

Flax seeds are an excellent source of fiber and have little flavor, so you can add them to anything, including soups, salads, pastas, eggs, and rice bowls. They will enhance your body’s ability to effectively absorb nutrients from your food, improve liver function, and keep your bowel movements regular.

2. Seasonal organic fruit

Fruit is one of the healthiest and most energizing foods you can eat. It’s quickly digested, so it’s best to eat on a completely empty stomach with no other foods. Fruit is full of nutrients including vitamin C, vitamin A, vitamin E, B vitamins, antioxidants and fiber. All of these are essential for a strong immune system and a vibrant body.

The first thing you should put in your body each day, after water, is fruit, as it’s hydrating and cleansing, and will gently activate your digestive system after a night’s worth of fasting. It’s great for snacking on and as a post-workout snack.

Berries, grapefruit, apples, bananas, peaches, oranges and lemons are all really healthy options to have around. Keep your home, work, and gym bag stocked with fruits you enjoy to help reduce cravings for sugars and sweets, and to get a juicy nutrient boost when you need it.

3. Quinoa

Quinoa is a great source of protein and an excellent grain to build a meal around. Not only is it extremely easy to cook, it keeps well and you get out of a small portion. It’s extremely nutrient dense and is a healthy and grounding whole grain to incorporate into your diet.

4. Cucumbers and celery

Many people overlook the health benefits of these two veggies, but they are nutritional powerhouses when it comes to staying hydrated, having glowing skin, and getting a big dose of micronutrients. They’re both extremely alkaline, so they help maintain a harmonious balance for your overall system and help to flush toxins from your system. Slice them to keep on hand to snack on raw or have with a fresh dip. You can juice them with fennel and apple, or chop them with cherry tomatoes for a crisp and refreshing salad.

5. Omega-3

Omega-3s are known as essential fatty acids, meaning that our body does not produce them on its own. Avocados, hemp seeds, walnuts, olive oil – find something you can add to at least one meal a day to insure you’re getting enough omega-3s in your diet. Omega-3s are responsible for clear skin, a healthy metabolism, mental strength and focus, mood stability, and efficient digestion. Incorporate omega-3s into your diet to strengthen the health of your overall system.

Having these staples in your kitchen will help round out your diet and will support your energy and overall vitality. Let us know in the comments below what foods you love to enhance your daily life and vibrance.
